How to Cancel Service and Avoid Zombie Lines

April 19, 2016

When you switch carriers, your new carrier will not cancel your old service for you. You have to cancel it, but be careful when you do.

Do NOT cancel your old service until your new device(s) can call, text and go online without WiFi.

Moving your phone number – porting – can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 24 hours. Moving multiple lines can take several days.

If the info you give your new carrier does not match the info in your current carrier’s records exactly, delays tend to happen.

After your new service is working with the phone number you want, call your old carrier and cancel your service. If you don’t, your old carrier may keep billing you. We call these “zombie lines” – lines ported out that continue to be billed. This can turn your bill into Month of the Living Dead.

Make sure you don’t end up with a zombie line — kill dead lines before they can come back to haunt you!
